What’s On My Mind
Opposing views are sometimes better together.
You want to succeed at business development, growing your book of business, relationships and career.
Super important, right?
Everything matters!
Every detail in the email, every word in the pitch.
But at the same time, if you put too much pressure on yourself, you won’t perform your best.
You don’t need this piece of business, this exact relationship. Besides, aren’t health, friends, and family the most important things?
Nothing about a specific client interaction matters!
How can we reconcile this?
They’re both true.
Everything Matters is important. It pushes us to do our best work, improve, and give a damn.
Nothing Matters is important too. Over the grandest of timescales, like billions of years, we’ll turn to dust along with about everything else.
I like both these truths together.
Everything Matters gets us to prepare our best for the big meeting.
Nothing Matters lets us walk in loose, ready to focus on the moment and perform our best. We might want this, but we don’t need this.
Everything Matters prompts us to reach out to that prospect offering something of value another time, even if they haven’t responded.
Nothing Matters lets us let go of worrying about if they respond.
Everything Matters gives us passion for what we do. We want to be the best!
Nothing Matters helps us recover when we cared so much, wanting something badly, but didn’t get the outcome we wanted. There will be another, and we’ll be ready for it.
Everything Matters.
And Nothing Matters.
And both beliefs together matter even more.
